The DeLonghi Magnifica S (ECAM 22.110.B) is the absolute classic among the affordable bean to cup coffee machines. You can use it to make espresso and coffee at the touch of a button. You can prepare the milk foam for cappuccino or latte macchiato with the integrated milk foam nozzle. We will explain how this works in our test report.
With a width of only 24 cm and the ability to pull out the water tank to the front, this model is ideal for small kitchens. This is one of the reasons why the Magnifica S has been a bestseller for years.
Milk frothing nozzle
The integrated milk foam nozzle allows you to prepare creamy milk foam for cappuccino or latte macchiato within a minute. It is located directly at the front left of the bean to cup coffee machine. You can also turn them outward a bit. Then even a large cup or milk jug will easily fit under it.
The cleaning of the milk nozzle is very well solved, because you can simply pull off the outer tube and the smaller nozzle underneath. Then simply rinse both briefly by hand. It doesn’t take a minute – it really couldn’t be easier. We’ll explain how to use the milk frother when you make a cappuccino.
DeLonghi Magnifica S bean hopper
At the top center of the bean to cup coffee machine is the bean compartment. The darkened lid protects the beans from light and air, so that the aroma is preserved longer .
Up to 250 grams of beans fit in the compartment, which is enough for around 30 drinks. Thanks to the large opening, the compartment is very easy to fill.
You can also use ground coffee powder. For this, you use the small compartment directly in the front of the bean compartment. Of course, your coffee will taste much better with freshly ground beans.
Grinder of the DeLonghi Magnifica S
Directly in the bean compartment you will also find the control for the grinder setting. At level 7, the beans are ground somewhat coarser and on level 1 they are ground quite fine. There is also an intermediate level for each, so you can adjust the grinder in a total of 13 steps.
This small marker shows you which level is currently set. We recommend a relatively fine grinder setting, level 2-3. We have achieved the best results with this in our tests.
You can adjust the grinder setting during the grinding process by turning it. When the grinder is in motion, it goes easiest and nothing jams.
Magnifica S water tank
The water tank is located on the right side of every DeLonghi bean to cup coffee machine and can easily be pulled out to the front. This is a great advantage, especially under wall cabinets.
The connection for a water filter is located directly in the water tank. With a filter, you have to descale much less often, But of course, the DeLonghi Magnifica S also works without a filter.
It fits up to 1.8 liters, which is enough for about 15 drinks. As soon as the tank is empty, a message (red LED symbol) appears in the display. Then you should pour in fresh, cold water. Thanks to the large opening, the water tank is easy to fill. Either directly at the vending machine or under the tap.
You can adjust the height of the coffee spouts from 8 to 14 cm. This means that even large latte macchiato glasses are no problem.
The lowest setting is ideal for small espresso cups. And thanks to the two coffee spouts, you can also prepare two espressi or coffee at the same time.
Everything seems pretty sturdy, too. Nothing wobbles or rattles as you might expect from such an inexpensive model.
Display & operation
Immediately after switching on, a flashing lamp shows you that the bean to cup coffee machine is heating up. The pipes are also flushed with hot water. After just under a minute, you can prepare the first drink.
This knob allows us to adjust the coffee strength. As you can see, there are many levels. We counted around 25 levels, or felt them by a slight click. We now select about level 20 for the espresso we are about to prepare.
Thehigher the level you select, the more coffee beans will be ground and the and the more intense your espresso or coffee will be.
Set the switch all the way down to the left to the coffee spoon icon, then activate the coffee powder compartment. Then you simply fill a measuring spoon of coffee powder into the compartment at the front of the bean hopper.
Use the 4 buttons with the cup symbols to select your drink. Links are the single and double espresso and on the right side the single and double coffee. So you can also prepare two cups at the same time. We will now show you the single espresso first.
We’ll explain how the milk frothing nozzle works in the cappuccino section. We also explain how you can adjust the temperature of the drinks and the milk foam, for example.
With the DeLonghi Magnifica S ECAM 22.110.B you can prepare espresso, coffee, cappuccino and latte macchiato. We will now introduce you to the 4 classics one after the other and give you tips on the settings.
We set the aroma to level 20 so that the espresso is nice and strong and intense. Now we click on the button for simple espresso and directly the grinding process begins. We measured an average of 71 decibels. This means that the DeLonghi Magnifica S is just as quiet or loud as other inexpensive bean to cup coffee machines from our test.
The espresso has a beautiful golden brown color, especially at the beginning of the brewing process. A fine, brown crema forms directly.
After drawing, we quickly measure
quickly measure the temperature. At 68°C, the espresso has the optimal temperature.
If you like it even hotter, you can increase the brewing temperature . We have set levels 3 of 4. You can set the brewing temperature by holding down the espresso button for 3 seconds – while the bean to cup coffee machine is switched off.
The more LEDs light up, the higher the brewing temperature. There are a total of 4 levels that you can set here via the espresso button. When all 4 LEDs are on, the temperature is at the maximum level. If only one or two levels are lit, the temperature is slightly lower. We recommend levels 3 or 4.
The crema is light brown and very fine. Taste-wise, the espresso is nicely intense and aromatic. Surprisingly good for such an inexpensive bean to cup coffee machine. By the way, most of the aromas come to the fore at a good 60°C. So it’s best to let your espresso stand for a minute before enjoying it.
With the double cup option, the bean to cup coffee machine grinds significantly longer and uses more coffee beans accordingly. By the way, the espresso is set to 40 ml per cup ex works. For coffee, it is 120 ml per cup. IYou can also freely adjust the beverage quantity. Wow we’ll show you how it’s done over coffee.
To program the beverage quantity, press and hold the coffee button for 3 seconds. Then we are in programming mode. The bean to cup coffee machine immediately starts to prepare the coffee and continues dispensing coffee until we press the button again. We have now prepared about 200 ml. This quantity is then stored for future reference. A maximum of 220 ml is possible.
At 73°C , the coffee is definitely hot enough (temperature level 3). If you want it even hotter, you can set the temperature to level 4. The crema is nice and dense and hazelnut brown. This is exactly how a coffee from the bean to cup coffee machine should look.
Another tip: we recommend that you do not set the beverage quantity too high. Dhe more water is forced through the coffee puck, the more likely your coffee will taste bitter. Interms of taste, the coffee is really good at 120 ml. If you want more coffee, simply press the coffee button again.
As an alternative to coffee, you can also prepare an Americano. Do do this, first prepare around 100 ml of water via the milk frother and then and then an espresso.
In terms of taste, the Americano is similar to the classic filter coffee. It is also particularly mild due to the shorter extraction of the coffee powder. Pdefinitely give it a try, it’s worth it.
Now we will show you how to prepare milk foam with the DeLonghi Magnifica S. To do this, we take cold milk from the refrigerator, ideally with about 3.5% fat and protein.
We fill 100 ml of milk into our cappuccino glass. It is important to remember that the volume of the milk doubles when frothing. Therefore, you should fill your glass no more than halfway.
We measure off about 100 ml – even if it is hard to read.
To froth the milk, we activate the steam button at the top right. Now briefly preheat the milk system. We already turn the milk nozzle outward so that we can reach it easily with our glass.
Then we dip the nozzle about 1 cm into the milk and turn on the valve. Now the milk is heated with hot steam. By the way, you cancontrol how hot the milk foam gets. Because the longer you lather, the hotter it gets. You don’t have to do anything but hold still for 30-40 seconds.
So slowly the volume of the milk increases and a fine foam forms. When you hear a slight bubbling sound, you should close the valve again. The milk will then have a temperature of about 65 to 70°C. It should not get much hotter than that, because above 70°C it can taste slightly burnt.
Next, we prepare the espresso. To do this, we deactivate the steam and select the espresso.
Simply always a great sight as the espresso flows into the milk. Wealso managed to get a fine milk foam topping. At71°Cthe cappuccino is hot enough – the perfect temperature.
The milk foam is really good as you can see. Pretty even and also relatively fine. It adheres wonderfully to the spoon. That’s the kind of consistency we want. For one of the first attempts really good. Ghe cappuccino also convinced us in terms of taste.
It is a little more effort than with automatic milk system, but the end result is really something to behold. Now let’s see how good the latte macchiato will be.
For the latte macchiato, we measure out about 160 ml of milk. Then we have the perfect ratio of espresso to milk. Namely, one part espresso to 4 parts milk. For the latte macchiato we measure off 160 ml of milk
We have preheated the milk system, immerse the nozzle just under a centimeter into the milk and open the valve. Now we froth up again until we hear a slight bubbling sound. This takes just under a minute for the latte macchiato, because we use more milk here than for the cappuccino.
You can already see how more and more milk foam forms. Wclose the valve again and turn the nozzle inward.
Now we prepare directly another espresso. Oh, wow that can really be seen! You see directly the typical three layers. The hot milk at the bottom, the espresso on top, and the fine milk foam on top.
At 64°C, the latte macchiato from the Magnifica S also has a super temperature. If that’s not hot enough for you, simply froth it for a few seconds longer. With a little practice, you’ll develop a good feeling for the optimal temperature.
The milk foam is again nice and even and fine. Here, the foam is even a bit creamier than in the cappuccino. This is because the milk foam is not quite as hot as in the cappuccino. Overall, a very good latte macchiato in any case.
Regular cleaning of the milk frothing nozzle, brewing unit and drip trays is particularly important. Overall, however, this is really quick and easy with the DeLonghi Magnifica S. You only need about 10-15 minutes per week for this. For this estimate, we assumed a purchase of 20 drinks per week.
Another important topic is the
. The DeLonghi Magnifica S must be decalcified approx. every 1-3 months, depending on the water hardness. The program takes about 45 minutes, but for you the effective effort is more like 5 minutes.
We have selected the original DeLonghi and a cheaper alternative for each of the most important care products. We recommend using the original descaler, at least during the warranty period.

Milk system cleaner
Clean milk frothing nozzle
It is best to wipe the milk frothing nozzle with a damp cloth immediately after frothing so that the milk does not dry out. Afterwards, you can prepare hot steam again for 5 seconds in order to to flush the nozzle properly. However, you have to think about it yourself, because no hint lights up in the display.
Then you take off the outer tube and rinses it briefly by hand. Once a week, you also take off the inner nozzle and rinse it with warm water as well. It is best if you soak both parts 1x per week for a few minutes in a
milk system cleaner
and then rinse thoroughly. This also makes it easy to remove milk fat.
So it doesn’t get much easier than the DeLonghi ECAM 22.110.B. This means that daily cleaning of the frothing nozzle only takes around 1 minute.
Empty drip tray & coffee grounds container
You should always empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds tray at the same time. Because as soon as you remove the two containers, the counter for coffee pucks is reset.
When this red LED lights up in the display or the red float in the drip tray is up, you must empty collection trays.
To do this, you can simply pull them out to the front.
You can prepare up to 14 drinks in a row before you have to empty the container. That is quite a lot compared to other bean to cup coffee machines in the test.
The coffee pucks are properly pressed and also relatively dry. Therefore, it is sufficient if you empty the container every 3 days, if not before the indication lights up..
The water from the rinsing processes collects under the drip tray. Tip: Simply place a cup underneath when switching on & off. Then you will have to empty the containers even less often.
Once a week you should rinse the containers thoroughly. The drip tray has a few corners that aren’t ideal to reach, but that’s just a minor side note. IHowever, the containers must not be put in the dishwasher. In our case, however, nothing happened at 40°C in Eco mode. All in all, the effort here is about 3 minutes per week.
Behind the water tank you will find another service door. When you open it, you can access the brewing unit. After you have switched off the bean to cup coffee machine and disconnected it from the power supply, you can simply remove it using the two red buttons, you can simply remove it using the two red buttons.
As with any other brewing unit, a few coffee residues can be found. This is quite normal and not a big deal.
To keep your coffee tasting good, you should rinse the brewing unit with warm water once a week. However, please do not use any washing-up liquid for this, only clear water. This is because there is some grease on each brewing unit to keep it running smoothly.
Then let them air dry, and then put them back in the next morning. Since the brewing unit is so compact and has no hidden corners, cleaning is done in 2 minutes.
Tip: If you reach up to the left in the interior, you will reach the plunger. It is also best to wipe this with damp kitchen roll once a week to remove the coffee residue.
You need to descale your DeLonghi Magnifica S approximately every 1-3 months, depending on how calcareous your water is. It is important that you set the water hardness on the bean to cup coffee machine so that it can remind you to descale in time.
If you use a water filter, you will have to descale the bean to cup coffee machine less often. However, the filters are a bit more expensive compared to the descaler. For this, the lime does not get into the machine in the first place. We have provided you with both the
original filter and descaler
and a cheaper alternative alternative.
You must descale as soon as the corresponding LED under the rotary switch flashes red. The program takes about 45 minutes, while the effort for you is effectively 5 minutes.
To descale, simply follow the steps in the instructions. Basically, all you have to do is pour the descaler and water into the tank, place a bowl underneath and start the program. In between, briefly rinse out the water tank and empty the bowl. Then the rinsing process starts to remove the descaler.
Since there is no display that shows you the next steps, you need the manual for this. It’s easier than it sounds, though. By the third time, you’ll know it by heart.
