Individual parts in detail
The Jura E8 bean to cup coffee machine is surprisingly compact with a width of 28 cm and a height of 35 cm. All important parts such as the water tank, the bean compartment and the drip trays are easy to reach from the front.
The casing is completely made of plastic, but it is particularly well manufactured. All individual parts are robust and fit perfectly with the housing. Jura Kaffeevollautomaten wollen hohe Qualität mit schönem Design verbinden und das hat bei der E8 auf jeden Fall geklappt.
One special feature in advance: The brewing unit is permanently installed in Jura bean to cup coffee machines. So you can’t (don’t have to) remove them and clean them by hand – an automatic cleaning program does that for you. The same applies to the milk system. And there it works really well. More about this under cleaning.
Milk system of the Jura E8
All milk foam beverages are prepared via the milk system on the right side. For cappuccino and co. the espresso comes out here as well. For this purpose, it has a separate milk and coffee spouts.
You can easily adjust the height of the outlets from 11 to 15 cm. This means that even large latte macchiato glasses are no problem.
As you can see, there is only one milk spout, so you can only prepare cappuccino & co. individually. Of course, we’ll show you exactly how good the milk foam is. Here on the right, you’ll insert the milk tube and then dip it directly into a milk carton.
If you want, you can also use a milk container. A nice glass milk container for the Jura E8 is available for around 20 euros. It fits 500 ml of milk in the tank, which is enough for up to 5 drinks. The best milk foam is made with cold milk with approx. 3.5% fat.
The milk container fits perfectly in the refrigerator door and, by the way, is also dishwasher safe. We’ll take a closer look at cleaning later.
The bean compartment is located on the top center of the bean to cup coffee machine. Your beans are ideally protected from light and air here, because the compartment is inside and therefore darkened all around. It is also airtight, as the lid has a circumferential rubber seal. This preserves the flavor of your beans well.
With up to 280 grams of beans that fit into the compartment, you can prepare about 25 drinks.
Compared to the Jura E6, you can also use ground coffee here. To do this, fill a maximum of 2 scoops into the compartment behind the bean compartment. Ideal if you ever want to use decaffeinated coffee powder.
Jura E8 grinder
Right next to the powder compartment, you will find the grinder setting control. This is a great solution, because you don’t have to reach directly into the bean compartment to adjust the grinder setting. You can adjust the grinder in 6 levels. The smaller the dot, the finer the grinder setting. We recommend level 2 for espresso and all beverages prepared with espresso, e.g. cappuccino and latte macchiato.
For all coffee drinkers, we recommend the somewhat coarser level 4. If you want to drink espresso and coffee, it’s best to try the golden mean at level 3. Here you can see how evenly and finely the coffee beans are ground.
Please adjust the grinder setting only during the grinding process, otherwise the grinder could possibly be damaged. With the hardened steel conical burr grinder installed here, this is unlikely, but better safe than sorry. With an average of 64 decibels, the Jura E8 has one of the quietest grinders in the test. In any case, you don’t wake up the whole family in the morning when you prepare a coffee.
The water tank is on the left side of the Jura E8. With its ribbed look, it is definitely an eye-catcher and rounds off the design nicely. You just have to open the lid, lift it slightly and then you can bring it forward to you. This also works perfectly with wall cabinets.
As you can see, we have already installed a water filter. If you use a filter throughout, you will never need to descale. Very practical and saves some effort. Costs a few euros extra for the filters. By the way, the first water filter is included in the delivery and you have to install it as well. After that, you can of course use the E8 without a filter.
It is best to fill the tank completely with fresh water every morning. Either directly at the device or under the tap. The nearly 2 liters of water are enough for about 15 drinks.
When the tank is empty, a message also appears on the display. However, if the tank runs empty during preparation, the process is interrupted. It is therefore best to check the tank every now and then.
The coffee spouts in the center prepare espresso and all coffee variants. You can choose it from 7 to 11 cm in height. adjust. Perfect for small espresso and regular coffee cups. You can also prepare espresso and coffee in a double cup option.
All drinks prepared with hot water can only be prepared individually. Because there is only one hot water outlet. This is the case, for example, with Caffè Barista – an espresso extended with hot water.
Overall, the coffee spouts and the separate coffee and milk spouts of the milk system look very high-quality. They can be easily adjusted in height and are suitable for all cup sizes. A small lamp even illuminates your drinks. Everything is very well thought out.
The display is very clearly arranged. On the screen you will always see four drinks that you can select using the buttons on the sides.
Use the button at the bottom right to scroll to the next pages. There you will find other drinks: coffee, lungo barista, flat white, espresso doppio, espresso macchiato, cappuccino, hot water and milk foam.
As soon as you select a beverage, the bean to cup coffee machine immediately starts preparing it. Then you still have the option to adjust the coffee strength or change the filling quantity. The cogwheel at the bottom left takes you to the main menu. There you will find many
further setting options
which we will take a closer look at later.
When we tap the espresso, the bean to cup coffee machine starts brewing immediately. If you want, you can even adjust the coffee strength and filling quantity during preparation.
All settings that you can make are explained under Settings. In total, a draw takes about 40 seconds. In the double cup option, it takes just under 1:30 minutes. A small LED on the coffee spouts illuminates the drinks nicely. This really sets the scene for the crema. At 70°C, the espresso is already quite hot on medium levels.
The crema is very fine and hazelnut brown. In taste, the espresso is really intense and the nutty flavors of our beans come through well. The espresso is definitely one of the best we’ve had so far.
For a large cup of coffee, we like to use the double cup option. Why? Here the matching Tip: your coffee will taste much more intense if you use two coffee pucks per cup. Because the first 100 ml of each puck are the most aromatic. The longer the extraction takes, the sooner the coffee becomes bitter. Therefore, we prefer to prepare 2×90 ml instead of 1×180 ml. Try it out in any case.
We then measure the temperature again directly after drawing, because many love really hot coffee. At medium levels, we already measure 74°C here, very good.
As you can see, the coffee also has a fine, light brown crema. Taste it is nice intense and strong aroma. Overall, a convincing coffee.
A good alternative to the classic coffee is the Caffe Barista – an espresso extended with hot water. Here, not all the water is pressed through the coffee puck, but first an espresso and then hot water is prepared.
This preparation makes the extraction of the coffee puck even shorter. Therefore, almost no bitter substances end up in the cup of Caffè Barista, which makes it particularly easy to digest. It is more similar in taste to a filter coffee. Just give it a try.
Just as with espresso, you can still use the following options during the grinding process adjust the coffee strength. After that, the milk foam is prepared first. The amount is given in seconds, so we had to experiment a bit until we found the perfect amount. Our 280 ml glass is exactly full in 20 seconds.
After the milk foam, the espresso is added. Here you can also adjust the filling quantity if you want. 40 ml of espresso and 20 seconds of milk foam are pretty much the same as the original recipe.
The cappuccino is ready in just under 1 minute. Compared to other bean to cup coffee machines, this is really fast and makes up for the lack of a double cup option. You can only prepare two cappuccinos one after the other, but they are ready just as quickly as in the bean to cup coffee machine with the double cup option.
After drawing, we check the temperature directly. 67°C is ideal, because this is how cappuccino is served in a café. We measure 65°C here on medium level. So there is still some room for improvement.
The milk foam looks very fine and even. In technical jargon, this is called micro foam , and only a few bean to cup coffee machines achieve this. The milk foam is slightly sweet and the espresso aromas are clearly evident. An all-around successful cappuccino.
Of course, we want to get our 400 ml glass completely full. Therefore, we have set the milk foam quantity to just under 30 seconds . If it should be too much or too little, we can also adjust the amount at any time during preparation.
In addition, we can set a short pause before the espresso during latte macchiato. This is because milk and foam must first separate from each other so that the espresso can flow between them. Only then do the typical 3 layers form. Between 20 and 30 seconds is perfect. Everything has been thought of in the Jura E8.
We measure 65°C – this gives the latte macchiato the ideal temperature.
The milk foam, as you can see, is very fine and uniform. Just the way we want it. You can see how the typical 3 layers form. Below the warm milk, above the espresso and above the milk foam. Taste really good.
The Flat White is a variation of the Cappuccino. Here, a double espresso or at least a strong espresso is prepared first, followed by the milk foam. As a result, the milk foam mixes with the crema of the espresso and therefore gets a nice brown shimmer. In terms of taste, the Flat White is reminiscent of a strong cappuccino.
You can reprogram the cortado (espresso with the same amount of milk) to a small latte. Milk coffee is perfect if you like it particularly mild and otherwise like to drink your coffee with a big sip of milk.
First prepare a small 80 ml coffee and then add the same amount of warm milk. Or even more if you want. Normally latte has no milk foam but what’s against a little milk foam hood.
Set coffee strength
As soon as you have selected a beverage, the bean to cup coffee machine starts preparing it. As long as the grinder is running, you can adjust the coffee strength. Here you have a total of 10 levels to choose from – from very mild to very strong coffee. Each level is represented by half a coffee bean. The higher the level, the more coffee powder the machine uses.
Extra shot for even more flavor
If you hold the gear button for 2 seconds, you will activate the Extra Shot. Then two coffee pucks are used for our drink and extracted with half the amount of water each. This will make your drink even more aromatic and intense. In our test, we got two 20 ml espressos for the latte macchiato.
You can activate the Extra Shot for Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato and Flat White. In the same way, you can also use the compartment for ground coffee.
Activate double cup option
If you tap a beverage button twice, you activate the double cup option. However, it only works for espresso and coffee. All drinks that are prepared with milk foam can only be prepared individually (the device has only one milk spout). The same applies to beverages that are diluted with hot water (e.g. Caffee Barista). With the double cup option, the bean to cup coffee machine always prepares 2 coffee pucks.
Adjust beverage quantity
During preparation, you can adjust the amount of espresso or coffee in 5 milliliter increments.
You can set the amount of milk foam for cappuccino and the like in seconds. This refers to the duration of milk frothing. The longer the bean to cup coffee machine foams milk, the more milk foam you get. In our test, our 280 ml cappuccino glass was perfectly filled with 20 seconds of milk foam and 40 ml of espresso.
For beverages that are mixed with hot water (e.g. Caffee Barista), you can set the amount of espresso and hot water to milliliters.
With the latte macchiato, you can also set after how many seconds the espresso is added. This is because the milk and milk foam should first separate so that the espresso can flow between them. Thus, the typical 3 layers are formed in the latte macchiato.
This is a setting that we have not yet seen in any other bean to cup coffee machine. Whether this is really necessary we may somewhat doubt. According to Jura, between 20 and 30 seconds is ideal.
Save beverage settings
If you want to save the settings you have made for a drink, you must tap “Save” at the end of the preparation.
If you prefer to make the settings before preparation, you must press and hold the respective beverage button for 2 seconds. Then tap on “Product settings” and you can make all the settings at your leisure: Coffee strength, espresso quantity, milk foam quantity and brewing temperature.
For each drink, you can set the brewing temperature in 3 levels. The temperature always prepares the espresso or coffee. The milk foam temperature cannot be adjusted. In our test, all drinks were already at a good temperature on medium levels.
Sort order of drinks
You can also adjust the order of the drinks. This way, your favorite drinks are always displayed at the front and you don’t have to scroll through the drinks list forever.
To do this, simply hold down the respective beverage button and then tap on “Replace product“. Now you can swap the drink with another drink. For example, we swapped the Cappuccino (on page 3) with the Cortado (on page 1).
You can also activate the “intelligent mode” in the main menu. Then the bean to cup coffee machine automatically sorts the beverages according to their preparation frequency. The more often you prepare a drink, the further ahead it will be displayed.
If you want, you can also control the Jura E8 via app. For this you need a Smart Connect plug (approx. 25 €). You will find the connection under the flap behind the water tank. Then install the Jura app on your phone and connect to the bean to cup coffee machine.
In the app, you can prepare any drink by tapping once. If you press and hold a beverage icon for 2 seconds, you can adjust all settings: Coffee strength, fill quantity, milk foam quantity, brewing temperature, Extra Shot.
You can even create your own drinks via the plus sign and save them with your personal settings. You can also control all cleaning programs via the app. By the way, we present the app to you in detail in our video.
If you want to prepare intense espresso and creamy milk foam for a long time, thorough cleaning is essential. The Jura E8 has many automatic programs that help you clean the milk system and brewing unit. Overall, the cleaning and care of the Jura E8 is very well thought out and done in just under 20 minutes per week.
In addition, decalcification is necessary every 1-3 months. The program takes about 40 minutes and the effective effort for you is a good 5-10 minutes. If you use a water filter, you don ‘t need to descale at all, according to Jura.
We have for you the
most important care products
Jura water filter
Jura cleaning tablets
Jura cleaning set
Jura milk system cleaner
Clean milk system
After you have prepared all the desired beverages with milk foam, you should start a short rinse of the milk system. Then the milk spout is thoroughly cleaned with hot water and steam and no milk residue is left behind. It’s best to simply set it to automatically flush after 15 minutes. A clever function that we have only known from Jura so far.
According to the instructions, you should start the thorough cleaning of the milk system once a day. To do this, use a special container and fill a portion of Jura Milk System Cleaner into the left compartment. Then place it under the outlet and connect the milk tube to the container.
Then the tablets are automatically dissolved in water. The cleaning agent is then fed into the machine through the milk tube and the milk system is thoroughly rinsed. In total, cleaning takes only about 4 minutes. The program is not only very important, but really well thought out. You only need to fill in the detergent and click start and everything else runs automatically.
Once a day, you should remove the fine foam nozzle and rinse it by hand.
Jura also recommends that you replace the milk tube and the replaceable milk spout every 3 months.
If you use a milk container, you should rinse it thoroughly every 2-3 days or put it in the dishwasher.
Cleaning the milk system is really very simple and done in effectively 2 minutes per day. Everything is perfectly thought out, one can only praise.
Empty drip tray & coffee grounds container
By the way, the coffee grounds tray can hold up to 16 coffee pucks, which is a lot compared to other fully automatic coffee machines. When the container or drip tray is full, a message appears in the display.
According to the instructions, you should empty the collection trays once a day and rinse them. That’s where law is very thorough. It would certainly be enough to empty the containers every other day, as the coffee pucks are relatively dry. You can simply pull out both shells to the front.
It is best to dispose of the coffee pucks in the organic waste. By the way, both containers are dishwasher-safe. Alternatively, you can rinse them thoroughly by hand 1x per week, which is also easy because they have no hidden corners.
All in all, cleaning the collection trays is done in about 3 minutes per week.
Cleaning the brewing unit of the Jura E8
Since the brewing unit is permanently installed in all Jura devices, you will have to regularly start an automatic program for cleaning. We like the fact that this program is even certified by TÜV.
A small bar in the menu or in the app shows you when the next cleaning is due.
According to the instructions, you should start the program after about 180 pulls or when you have switched on the bean to cup coffee machine 80 times. Depending on which comes first. With just a few clicks in the app, you can also reorder the original
cleaning tablets in just a few clicks
just like water filters and descalers.
The whole program lasts 20 minutes, while the effective effort for you is no more than 5 minutes. All you have to do is briefly empty the collection trays, place a container underneath and insert the cleaning tablet.
Since the program only needs to be done about once a month, the weekly effort for you is only minute.
Of course, there is also an automatic program for descaling. It takes about 40 minutes, but you only have to actively do something for a good 5 minutes. For decalcification, dissolve 3 tablets in 500 ml of water. We have the right
descaling tablets and water filters
If you use water filters throughout, you do not need todescale your bean to cup coffee machine at all. If you do not use a water filter, you will need to descale approximately every 1-2 months, depending on the water hardness. You can see when the next descaling is due in the menu and in the app.
It is important that you use the test strip to determine the water hardness. After that, you set it in the menu so that the device can automatically remind you about the next descaling.
We really like the fact that you are guided through every step via the display. This makes the instructions superfluous.
